Don’t Be Fooled By Misleading Solicitations

With the New Year upon us, many solicitations begin to show up in the mail seeking payment for annual fees from unsuspecting businesses.  Be wary of solicitations for annual report filings, business license requirements, corporate consents, records in lieu of meeting minutes, or annual minutes requirements as they are not always from the government agency where your business is qualified.  They may appear to be genuine requests from the state but be sure to read the fine print.  These “required” filings will say that they are not endorsed by any government agency.  This will help you determine whether the form is legitimate or not.  There will be a high filing fee and a warning of penalties and fines if not paid timely.  If you are unsure of the form you receive, check with the state where you are registered to do business or check with your registered agent.
